Avs aim to halt four-game skid versus Islanders

Hockey Betting Lines

03/02/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Colorado Avalanche will try to avoid tying their longest losing streak of the season when they visit the New York Islanders for tonight's interconference clash at Nassau Coliseum.

The Avalanche ended the month of February on a four-game losing streak, marking the third time the club has lost four straight in just over a month. Colorado, which is just 6-15-0 in its last 21 games, set a season-high with five consecutive losses from October 28-November 6.

Colorado will also be happy to end its longest road trip of the season tonight, as it plays the sixth and final game of the swing on Long Island. The Avs are 1-4 on the trek and are just 11-20-1 as the visiting club this season. In addition to losing four straight on the road, Colorado has also lost nine of its 11 games as the visitor.

Tonight's test pits the last place teams in each conference against one another. The Islanders are last in the NHL and the Eastern Conference with just 45 points, while Colorado is 15th in the West with 57 points.

The Avalanche have been outscored 10-1 in their last two games, as they were blanked by New Jersey, 4-0, on Thursday before getting handed a 6-1 thrashing Saturday against the New York Rangers. Scott Gomez posted a goal and two assists as the Rangers used a four-goal first period en route to the lopsided victory at Madison Square Garden.

Ryan Smyth notched the lone goal for the Avalanche. Starter Peter Budaj was victimized for three goals on nine shots in just over 13 minutes. Andrew Raycroft finished the game by allowing three goals on 21 shots.

The Islanders, meanwhile, are coming off a victory as they ended a two-game slide with Saturday's win over visiting Buffalo.

Yann Danis stopped 31 shots to secure his second consecutive home shutout and Sean Bergenheim scored twice as the Islanders beat the Sabres, 2-0, at the Coliseum.

Jack Hillen, Kyle Okposo, and Frans Nielsen each had an assist for the Islanders, who bounced back from a 5-4 defeat in a shootout against Toronto on Thursday.

Danis made a career-high 40 saves to earn his second career shutout in a 4-0 win over the Devils on February 21.

The Islanders are playing the third test of a season-high six-game homestand today and are 13-13-5 as the host this year. New York, which will host the rival Rangers on Thursday, has won six of its last nine games at the Coliseum.

New York is 3-0-1 with a tie in the last five meetings with the Avalanche, but Colorado ended a four-game series winless streak with an overtime victory in Denver the last time the clubs met on January 5 of the 2007-08 season. Colorado has lost four straight in the Coliseum.

Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament odds
As of February 9, MySportsbook.com has released its coveted 2007 Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament betting odds. “March Madness betting ” only a month away, the top ranked Florida Gators are favorite at 7-2 to win it all. The defending champs have not disappointed at all this season and currently have a 22-2 record and are undefeated (9-0) in SEC play. The Gators’ thrive off of their extremely balanced, experienced and versatile attack. All five starters started in last seasons National Championship game. What is most impressive with this group is their balance; the five starters all average between 10.7 and 13.6 PPG. The Gators have been on an absolute roll having won 15 straight by an average of 16.4 PPG.

Right behind the Gators are the 5th ranked UNC Tar Heels at 9-2. The Heels (21-3, 7-2) are absolutely loaded with top notch talent and are as deep as any team in the country. A concern for the Tar Heels might be inexperience. Of their top four scorers/ minute earners, three are freshmen and the other is a sophomore. The rest of the regular season, the Tar Heels play only one team that is currently ranked (Duke). Their remaining opponents do combine for an impressive 107-58 record though.

Other teams that the MySportsbook.com members seem to believe will win it all include the west coasts’ top team #2 UCLA (6-1), #3 OSU behind man-child Greg Oden (8-1), and #4 Wisconsin (10-1) behind their defense which has given up 70+ points only three times all season.

Below is a list of some of the favorites to win the 2007 Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship lines. For the full list of teams and March Madness odds be sure to log onto MySportsbook.com.
